From Swamp to Rest Stop: Rebranding the Alligator Alley Rest Area

6/20/2025 - 10:50am-11:45am

The history of the segment of I 75 known as Alligator Alley sets the stage for the newly created MM 35 Rest Area in District 4. The current project aimed to improve the existing I-75/Alligator Alley rest area by constructing educational amenities within the existing site. The construction of educational amenities required reconfiguring existing parking lots, access roads, drainage structures, utilities, lighting, and sidewalks, while ensuring sustainability and functionality. The proposed educational amenities include an observation tower, boardwalks, walkways, asphalt trails, a dog park, pavilions, hardscape elements (such as benches, trash receptacles, drinking fountains), and landscaping. A bronze life size alligator statue is the main feature within the Environmental Educational Center limits. The project also includes the replacement and reconstruction of the Truck Parking Availability System (TPAS). A freshly planted wetland exhibit and arboretum showcases the flora and fauna of the Everglades ecosystem
